Google reviews widget for gyms

Prospective members compare gyms on cleanliness, staff, class quality, and how the membership works. Put reviews beside the trial and join steps.

Updated October 2026

What prospective members look for

Gym reviews fall into a few clear groups: equipment and cleanliness, coaches and classes, crowding at peak hours, and the business side such as joining and cancelling. A visitor deciding whether to claim a trial pass reads all of them.

Search your reviews in the dashboard for words like "coach" or "clean", and save the matches to named collections. Then show coaching reviews on the class page and cleanliness reviews on the facilities page.

Where the widget sits in the trial and join flow

Most gym sites push toward one action: a free trial or day pass. Put a short carousel directly above the trial form and a list layout on the membership page. Keep the price, contract length, and cancellation terms in your own copy, close to the join button. Reviews that mention cost go out of date quickly, so leave them out of your collections.

For multi-location gyms, connect each location's Google listing separately. A member of the downtown club doesn't want the uptown club's reviews on their page.

Cancellation complaints: don't hide them

Reviews about billing and cancelling are often the hardest ones for a gym to read. It's tempting to hide them in the widget. If you do, don't say the widget shows everything customers say. The FTC's review rule bars a business from saying its reviews section shows all or most reviews when it hid reviews based on their ratings. Better to answer those reviews with the real cancellation steps.

Widget settings that suit a gym site

A review pop-up can work on a class schedule page. Set its target pages so it appears only there, such as /classes and everything under it. It waits a few seconds or until the visitor scrolls part of the way down. It won't open while someone is typing in a form, so it doesn't interrupt a trial sign-up. It stays off on phones unless you turn it on, and a visitor who closes it won't see it again for a set number of days.

Members may not want their full name next to a comment about their fitness. In the widget's content settings you can show names as full name, first name and last initial, or first name only. This changes only what your site shows. The review on Google is not changed.

Example: trial pass to review

  1. A visitor claims a 7-day trial on the page that shows the review carousel.
  2. Day 3: a coach follows up in person about goals. No review request yet.
  3. Day 8, after the trial ends: a message goes to every trial guest, joiners and non-joiners, with the Google review link.
  4. At day 30, members get one message with the same link. Members who cancel get it too.

Request templates

  1. After a trial: "Thanks for trying the gym. If you'd like to leave an honest Google review of your visit, here's the link: [link]."
  2. After a month: "You've been training with us for a month. If you want to share your experience, here's the link: [link]."
  3. After a class series: "Thanks for joining the class. If you'd like to review the coaching, here's the link: [link]."

Don't tie a free month, a guest pass, or merchandise to a review. Don't run a "review us to enter the prize draw" either. Google's review policy bans payments, discounts and free goods or services for reviews. Front-desk staff also shouldn't ask only the members they know are happy. The policy bans selectively asking for positive reviews.

Set up the widget

Paste your Google Maps link, choose a layout, and paste the script on your trial and membership pages. The Free plan covers one widget with up to 20 reviews, refreshed monthly. The Reviews plan syncs automatically, which keeps new member reviews flowing in. Stars won't appear in search for your own site's reviews (why).

Frequently asked questions

Should the widget sit above the trial form?

Yes, as a short carousel. Keep the form short. A badge floats in a page corner, so check it doesn't cover the form on phones.

Can I ask only members who enjoy the gym?

No. Ask all trial guests and members, including those who leave.

What if a review is about cancellation?

Reply with the real steps. Don't hide it and then claim the widget shows all feedback.

Can I feature a review about a promo price?

No. Promotions change.

Can each location have its own widget?

Yes. Connect each location's listing.
