How to add Google reviews to Shopify

Place a Google Business Profile review widget in the right Shopify theme template and check where it appears across your store.

Updated October 2026

Quick answer

  1. In Shopify admin go to Online Store and click Edit theme next to your theme (some screens still say Customize). Pick the page template (home, product, etc.).
  2. Click Add section, choose Custom Liquid, and paste the VerifiedWidget script.
  3. Move the section where reviews belong, save, and check the live storefront.

Not every theme has a Custom Liquid section or block; if yours does not, ask the theme developer. Test on a duplicated theme first if you prefer.

What you need

A saved widget with its script copied from the Embed dialog, and permission to edit your Shopify theme. These are business reviews, not product reviews, so label the section something like "What customers say about our business".

Add Google reviews in five steps

  1. Prepare your review display

In VerifiedWidget, connect your business with its Google Maps link. Check the imported business and review dates. Build a widget, choose a layout for the intended Shopify section, save it, and copy its script tag from the Embed dialog. The Free plan includes one widget, up to 20 imported reviews refreshed monthly, and 10,000 views per month. Automatic sync is on a paid plan.

  2. Identify the theme and target template

In Shopify admin, open Online Store and click Edit theme. Use the page selector at the top to choose Home page, a product template, or another page template. Shopify says Online Store 2.0 themes, and newer themes built with theme blocks, support sections on all pages. An older vintage theme supports sections on the home page only. Make sure you are editing the template that the intended products actually use.

  3. Add a Custom Liquid section where available

In the template body, choose Add section and look for Custom Liquid. If your theme offers it, add that section, paste the complete VerifiedWidget script into its code field, and move it below the appropriate product information or homepage explanation. Some themes offer a Custom Liquid block inside an existing section instead. Use the option your theme exposes; section and block availability varies by theme. Save the theme changes.

  4. Check product and collection scope

If you added code to the default product template, every product using that template may show the same business reviews. That can be appropriate for store reputation, but it is not product-specific feedback. For a selected product or category, create or assign a separate template in a theme that supports it, then put the section there. Keep any product review app's product ratings separate from Google Business Profile reviews so shoppers can tell what is being reviewed.

  5. Publish and inspect the storefront

Open the public storefront rather than trusting the theme preview alone. Check the homepage, one product that should display the widget, and one that should not. Try a narrow phone screen and a wide desktop screen. Check the attribution, links, card spacing, and whether the widget delays or covers a purchase button. If you have enabled a domain allowlist in VerifiedWidget, include the live storefront hostname.

Custom Liquid or a Shopify review app?

A Custom Liquid section is a piece of your theme's template. It lets you position the VerifiedWidget embed without installing a Shopify app, provided the theme accepts the snippet there. It is a good fit for a general store reputation section. Shopify App Store review apps can offer theme app blocks, app embeds, product-specific review requests, or other store workflows. Check each app's listing and current terms for its actual Google Business Profile support. App blocks require a compatible theme, and some blocks work only on particular page types. An app embed may be invisible or float over the page rather than sit exactly where a product review section belongs.

If an app is already collecting reviews of purchased products, keep that display if it serves shoppers. A Google reviews widget can sit beside it with a clear heading such as “Reviews of our business.” Theme behavior and app options vary by theme. Test the new placement after switching themes. Our grid layout suits a full section; a badge floats in a screen corner on every page where its code loads.

Where to put it in a Shopify store

On the homepage, place a short review section after the brand story or best sellers. On a product page, put it below the main product details or near a shipping and service assurance area. Do not imply the Google reviews are verified purchases of that product. A contact or about page can show a list of service experiences, especially for local pickup, installation, or after-sales support. A booking page for consultations can use a compact layout near the booking button. Avoid putting a large review grid in the shared Header or Footer area. Shopify says those areas are shared across all store pages. Repeated embeds can use up monthly widget views and crowd navigation.

A template is shared by all items assigned to it. If you have separate product lines, decide whether the same business review collection makes sense for all of them. You can create a named review collection for a relevant service, but do not call store reviews product reviews. If a template change seems to affect unexpected products, check each product's theme template assignment in Shopify before moving the widget again.

Mobile and performance check

Use the theme editor's phone preview, then test an actual published product URL on a phone. A wide carousel can become too cramped inside a narrow product information column; move it into a full-width section or switch to a list. Make sure the cards do not push the purchase button too far down or cover a sticky add-to-cart bar. Read one complete long review and check that the last line and the link back to Google remain visible. On a slower connection, verify that the page still gives shoppers the product information and purchase controls before the reviews finish loading.

If you use several markets or languages, visit at least one representative storefront URL for each setup. Shopify can vary sections and content by market. Also check your store's cookie consent setup if you turn on optional analytics. Operational view metering is separate from extra analytics controls in VerifiedWidget.

Widget not showing? Check these first

If the widget is still blank on the published page, work through the general checklist.

Search results and review claims

Showing reviews helps visitors, not search stars: see our guide to Google star ratings. Do not add product review markup to general business reviews.

Frequently asked questions

Can I add Google reviews to Shopify without an app?

Yes, if your theme provides a suitable Custom Liquid section or block, you can paste a VerifiedWidget script there. Theme capabilities vary, so check your theme editor.

Does a product template show the widget on every product?

It can. A shared template affects every product assigned to it. Create or assign a separate template if only selected products should show that review section.

Are Google business reviews the same as product reviews?

No. Google Business Profile reviews describe the business. Product reviews are about a particular item, so label the two sections clearly.

Does Online Store 2.0 matter?

Yes. Online Store 2.0 and theme-block themes support sections on every page. Vintage themes support sections on the home page only, so a product-page placement may not be possible.

Why did my reviews disappear after changing themes?

The new theme may not have the same Custom Liquid section or an app block may need activating again. Recheck the live theme and its templates.
