Google reviews not showing? Causes and fixes

A missing Google review is usually one of four things. Google may still be checking it. It may have been posted to a different profile. Google may have removed it. Or your website widget is out of date. The steps below tell you which.

Updated October 2026

Quick answer: work out where it is missing

  1. Open your business in Google Maps while signed out. If the review shows there, the problem is your website widget: refresh it or check its filters.
  2. If it is not on Maps, check whether it is new. Google can take a few days to publish a review.
  3. Ask the reviewer to open Google Maps on a computer, choose Menu, Your contributions, Reviews, and confirm the business name and address match your profile.
  4. If it was public and then disappeared, note the date it was last seen and any recent profile merge, reinstatement or category change.
  5. Still missing? Contact Google Business Profile support about a missing review, with the profile and review details.

Google decides what is published. Neither you nor a website widget can restore a review that Google removed.

First identify what is actually missing

Open the business in Google Maps while signed out, then open the same place in Google Search. Note the business name, address, profile URL, total review count, and the date and wording of the review you expect. A count falling is different from one review being hard to find in a sorted list. A customer seeing their own contribution in their account is different from another person seeing it publicly. These observations point to different next steps.

Also check whether your website widget is the only place the review is absent. A widget may show an older imported set, apply a rating or keyword filter, or be connected to the wrong location. If the review is visible on Google but missing from your site, diagnose the widget connection and refresh before opening a missing-review case with Google. If it is absent on Maps and Search too, start with Google's own guidance on delayed and missing reviews.

Write down a short timeline: when the customer posted, when you last saw the review, when the count changed, and whether you merged or reinstated the profile. Do not ask the customer to post the same text again while you investigate.

A new review may be delayed

Google checks submitted reviews against its content policies before they appear. Its help page says this can sometimes take a few days. A delay is therefore possible even when the reviewer completed the form and saw a confirmation. Google gives no exact timeline. Wait a few days, then check the right profile again.

The customer can look in Google Maps under their own contributions to see what they posted. They should check three things. Did they use the Google Account they expected? Do the place name and street address match? Is the review text still in their own account? If they never posted it, this is a customer-side completion issue rather than a removed public review. If they see it but others cannot, give Google the relevant details through the support route for missing reviews.

Google says people on older phones or software can have trouble leaving reviews, and suggests updating the Maps app. That helps a reviewer whose submission never completes. It does not explain a review that was public for weeks and then vanished.

Policy removal and automated filtering

Google says reviews are usually removed for policy violations such as spam or inappropriate content. It uses automated spam detection, and its own support page acknowledges that legitimate reviews can occasionally be removed by mistake. Google does not publish a complete explanation for each missing review. You cannot infer a precise rule violation from the star rating, the review length, or the customer's assurance that they posted it honestly.

A real customer can still post something that breaks a content rule, such as personal information or off-topic material. The full list of rules is in our guide to removing fake reviews. If several reviews disappeared together, check how you asked for them: Google bans paid reviews and asking only happy customers.

No script or timing trick guarantees a review will publish. Google says it will not restore a review removed for a policy violation. If you have evidence a genuine review was removed by mistake, send the details to Google support.

Profile changes and category restrictions

A business with multiple branches can have separate profiles. The review may be on the right brand but the wrong branch. Check the full address and place listing, especially if a business moved, changed names, or has near-duplicate profiles. Google says reviews from recently merged Business Profiles can take a few days to appear together. If the merger is recent, record the old and new profile details and allow for that delay before treating every missing item as a permanent removal.

Google also says user-created content, including reviews, can be temporarily disabled for certain profiles or categories. Google also removes and turns off reviews on profiles whose main category is a school for students aged 6 to 18. Universities, day cares, and swim schools are not part of that rule. Do not change a business category just to regain a review button; categories should describe the actual business. If your category appears wrong, correct the listing accurately and follow Google's category guidance.

A reinstated profile is another special case. Google's missing-review help says reviews may sometimes be removed after reinstatement and directs owners to contact support. If this happened, include the reinstatement date, the profile ID if available, and evidence of the previously visible reviews. Keep the issue separate from an appeal about the profile's suspension; these are related events but different requests.

The July 2026 review removal wave

Search Engine Roundtable reported on July 3, 2026 that many Business Profiles had lost visible reviews, sometimes alongside a pause on new reviews. The article quoted a Google spokesperson. When its systems detect suspicious reviews, Google may remove reviews or pause new ones on a profile. The spokesperson said Google was investigating and would restore any reviews removed incorrectly. The same article was later updated to say the issue had been resolved and missing reviews should be visible. That makes it a past incident, not a reason to assume every missing review today has the same cause.

A sudden drop across many locations, especially if new reviews also stop arriving, can be a platform-wide event rather than a problem with your profile. Document it and contact support. Counts differ between widgets, screenshots and Search because each updates at a different time, so compare against the public Business Profile.

A practical diagnostic checklist

Work from the simplest cause to the hardest. This avoids reporting a widget setting to Google as a removal, or telling a customer their review was deleted when it went to another branch.

How to contact Google about a missing review

Use the support link on Google's page about missing or delayed reviews. Choose the affected business. Google's community guide says to type Missing Review as the topic, then pick Review Missing as the issue.

The same guide lists what to include. Give your Business Profile ID, how many reviews are missing, and whether new reviews still appear. Add when they went missing, the reviewer names, and any related case IDs. Screenshots are optional but help.

Write a short factual account: 'Review from [display name], posted around [date], visible until [date], now absent from the [location] profile. We checked the public Maps listing and confirmed the customer used this location.' Include only details you actually know. If many reviews are missing, give a few representative examples and the overall timing. Leave out private customer data support has not asked for.

Google does not promise to restore a review or reply by a set date. Tell your customer that Google controls publication, and thank them for trying to share feedback.

When a website widget shows fewer reviews

A widget can show fewer reviews than Google because of an import limit, hidden reviews, a rating filter, or an old sync. Compare one known review on Google with your widget page, then check the dashboard settings. A missing card does not prove Google removed the review, and a card on your site does not prove it is still public on Google.

If you use VerifiedWidget, here is what happens. When a sync finishes, a review Google no longer returns can be hidden from your widgets, and its text cleared. VerifiedWidget does not get a reason from Google, cannot restore the review, and does not send a notice for each hidden review. Reviews refresh on a schedule set by your plan (Free refreshes monthly). So a recent change on Google may not show on your site yet. Check the last sync time in your dashboard before comparing counts.

If the widget is blank, test the live page on phone and desktop. Check the right business is connected. Also check your site is not blocking the embed script. Google support cannot help with that. If Google shows the review, fix the website first. If Google no longer shows it, follow Google's missing-review guidance.

Good habits for future review requests

Ask every customer with a genuine experience for an honest review, with no reward, no requested star rating and no suggested wording. Google allows asking for reviews and provides a shareable link and QR code in your Business Profile. Use the same neutral request for happy and unhappy customers.

Keep your profile address and category accurate so customers pick the right listing. Never ask for a customer's Google password or post a review for them.

Frequently asked questions

How long can a new Google review take to show?

Google says moderation can sometimes take a few days. It does not promise a fixed publication time.

Can a real customer review be removed by mistake?

Yes. Google's help says its automated spam detection can occasionally remove legitimate reviews; contact Google support with the details.

Did Google remove many reviews in July 2026?

Search Engine Roundtable reported a wave of removed reviews on July 3, 2026. The report was later updated to say the issue had been resolved. Check your current profile separately.

Can a widget restore a review missing from Google?

No. A website widget controls its own display. Google controls reviews on Maps and Search.

Should I ask the customer to post the review again?

First check their account, the target location, and Google's support guidance. Repeated duplicate submissions are not a reliable fix.
