How to report fake Google reviews for removal

You cannot delete someone else's Google review. You can report one that breaks Google's rules, track the decision, and appeal once if Google says it is fine. This is general information, not legal advice.

Quick answer: report a review in 5 steps

  1. Open your Business Profile, choose Read reviews, and find the review.
  2. Choose the report icon on that review.
  3. Pick the reason that truthfully fits, such as spam or profanity, and send the report.
  4. Check the decision in Google's Reviews Management Tool. It usually takes several days.
  5. If Google says there is no policy violation and you have new evidence, use Appeal eligible reviews. You get one appeal, for up to 10 reviews at a time.

Only reviews that break Google's policies can be removed. A harsh or unfair review that follows the rules stays up.

What Google will remove

You may report any review, but Google removes only those that violate its policies. It does not settle ordinary disagreements between businesses and customers. Ask which specific rule the review breaks and what evidence you have.

Google's Maps policy bans content that is not based on a real experience, and paid or incentivized reviews. It also bans impersonation, conflicts of interest, harassment, hate, off-topic content and personal information. A one-star review from an unfamiliar name is not proof of a fake: customers use different names, family accounts and old accounts.

Stick to what you can show. "The review names another business at another address" is a fact. "I cannot find this person in our records" is not enough on its own. Do not try to identify or contact the reviewer outside normal customer service.

Gather the evidence first

Save the review's URL, the reviewer's displayed name, the date, the star rating and the listing. Take a screenshot for your records. Write one sentence naming the policy you think applies, plus facts like a wrong location named in the text or a known competitor link.

For a suspected attack, note when the posts arrived and whether several carry similar wording. If anyone asks you for money or favors to remove reviews, keep the messages and use Google's extortion report form rather than negotiating. The form asks for screenshots of the demands, links to the reviews involved, and when the demand first arrived. Check that a teammate has not already reported the same review, and that you are signed in to the account that manages the right profile.

Report from your Business Profile

Open your Business Profile, choose Read reviews, find the review, choose its report icon, select the reason and send the report. Menus can look different by device, so use Google's help page if a label has moved. Report only reviews that break a policy. Google says not to report a review just because you disagree with it or dislike it.

If the review describes a real service failure, follow up privately and post a calm public reply. A log of review link, reason, report date and outcome helps if you report several.

Track it in Google's Reviews Management Tool

Sign in with the account tied to the profile and select the business. Choose to report a new review for removal, then pick the review and the reason. The same tool shows the status. Google lists outcomes such as Decision pending, Report reviewed - no policy violation, and an escalated appeal state with email updates.

Decision pending means Google has not finished. Google says evaluation typically takes several days. Wait for the decision before you take another step. If the result is no policy violation, re-read the rule against the actual text before appealing.

The one-time appeal

In the Reviews Management Tool, choose the option to check previously reported reviews, select Appeal eligible reviews, pick up to ten reviews, then complete the form. An appeal is only for a review Google already assessed as not violating policy.

Add a concrete detail your first report lacked, for example that the text names a different business, quotes a ransom request or exposes a phone number. Do not present guesses as facts, and redact private information in screenshots. Google emails you the result: if the review violates policy it is removed, otherwise it stays. Google gives no appeal turnaround, so check your wording before you submit.

What to expect after a decision

Google removes a review only once it finds a policy violation, so expect it to stay up while you wait. If it is removed, it no longer shows on Maps and Search, and your count and rating change. Each place can update at a different time. Your website widget updates on its own sync schedule.

If Google leaves the review up, that does not mean every claim in it is true, only that Google found no removable violation. Respond professionally and offer a normal resolution. Do not pressure a customer to remove a truthful review: Google prohibits incentives for editing or removing negative feedback.

Do not replace a removed review with paid praise. Google's guidance says fake-engagement violations can lead to limits on new reviews, temporarily unpublished reviews or a warning on the profile.

When a calm reply is the better move

If the review looks like a genuine visit with no clear policy problem, reply briefly and offer to talk. For example: "We're sorry this was your experience. We'd like to understand what happened and help. Please contact our team using the details on our website." This admits nothing you cannot verify and promises no refund. Avoid appointment details, payment history or health information.

If the review is abusive or exposes personal information, report that specific violation and keep any public reply short. A business cannot edit a customer's review, and a widget cannot change the original on Google.

What not to do

Do not buy a service that guarantees removal; no vendor controls Google's decision. Be wary of anyone asking for your Google password or suggesting a flood of new reviews to bury the old one.

Do not offer money, discounts or free goods in return for a review being changed or removed. Google's policy forbids it, and the FTC says paying to alter or remove truthful negative reviews may be unfair or deceptive under US law. For an allegation with serious legal consequences, get advice from a qualified lawyer; the Google process does not settle legal disputes. Do not post customer records publicly to challenge a review.

Frequently asked questions

Can I delete a review someone else wrote?

How long does Google take to review a flag?

Google says evaluation typically takes several days, but does not give a guaranteed deadline.

Can I appeal a rejected removal request?

Google's Reviews Management Tool offers a one-time appeal for eligible reviews that were reported and found not to violate policy.

Can I pay a customer to remove a negative review?

No. Google prohibits incentives to revise or remove negative reviews, and the FTC warns this may be unfair or deceptive. This is not legal advice.
