How to add Google reviews to Google Sites
Google Sites accepts a pasted script through Embed code, but it runs inside a frame, so height and the domain allowlist need attention.
Updated October 2026
Quick answer
- Copy the script tag from your widget's Embed dialog in VerifiedWidget.
- In Google Sites, choose Insert → Embed, then the Embed code tab.
- Paste the script, click Next, then Insert.
- Drag the block taller so the whole widget shows, then Publish.
What you need
Edit and publish rights on a site built in the current Google Sites editor. Google's Sites Help lists HTML and JavaScript under Insert → Embed → Embed code and names no paid plan for it.
Embed reviews in four steps
Make a short widget
Google Sites pages are often simple, with directions, hours and a contact link. A slider or small carousel keeps the page tidy. Avoid the badge and pop-up layouts here. They are built to float over the page, but inside the Google Sites frame they can only float within the small embed box. Save the widget and copy the full script tag; Google's instructions require JavaScript to sit inside script tags.
Use Embed code, not URL
Open the page, pick Insert on the right, then Embed. Switch to the Embed code tab, paste the script, click Next, then Insert. The URL tab is for web addresses and will not run a script.
Give the frame room
Resize the block so the last row of cards and any arrows are visible. Too short and you get a scrollbar inside the page or clipped text. Recheck the height whenever you change the number of reviews shown.
Publish and test the public page
Click Publish and open the published address on desktop and phone. If the site is shared only with certain people, make sure the intended viewers can open it.
Want a whole page of reviews? Google's help says you can also add an embed as a full page from the Pages panel. That suits a “Reviews” page linked from your menu.
The domain allowlist and the Google Sites frame
Google Sites does not put your script directly on the page. It loads the embed in a separate frame (a box that shows another page inside yours). That frame comes from a googleusercontent.com address, not from your site's own domain. Google's own embed help for partners tells site owners to allow googleusercontent.com for Google Sites. The domain allowlist (your list of sites allowed to show the widget) checks the address that loads the widget. Here, that is the frame's address, not your site's.
- Allowlist empty (always the case on the Free plan): nothing to do. The widget loads from any origin.
- Allowlist on (Reviews plan): the widget is refused unless the frame's address matches an allowed domain. Add
googleusercontent.comto the list; subdomains match automatically. Your own Google Sites address will not help, because the request does not come from it. - Because
googleusercontent.comis shared by many Google services, it is a loose restriction. If that bothers you, leave the allowlist empty for the widget you use on Google Sites and keep a stricter list on another widget.
The widget cannot read or change the rest of your Google Site. Scripts that expect the parent page may not work inside the frame.
Google Sites-specific problems
- Blank block after publishing. Check the allowlist first (above), then confirm the full script tag was pasted into Embed code and not the URL tab.
- Scrollbar inside the reviews. The frame is shorter than the widget. Increase the block height or pick a shorter layout, then republish and check mobile again.
- It only works in the editor preview, or only when signed in. Open the published address in a private window to see what visitors see.
Frequently asked questions
Does Google Sites require a paid plan for Embed code?
Google's Sites Help describes the feature without a paid-plan requirement. You still need permission to edit and publish the site.
Why is there a scrollbar inside my reviews?
The embed sits in a frame. Increase the block height in Google Sites or choose a shorter layout, then republish.
Can I paste the widget in the URL tab?
No. The VerifiedWidget embed is a script tag, so use the Embed code tab under Insert → Embed.
Why does my domain allowlist block the widget on Google Sites?
The request comes from the embed frame on googleusercontent.com, not your site's domain. Add googleusercontent.com, or leave the allowlist empty.
